The currant leaf mite (Anthocoptes ribis) is an acarine pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae, commonly known as gall or rust mites. Due to their microscopic size, these pests are rarely seen without magnification, though their impact on host plants is significant due to their specialized feeding habits.
This mite primarily infests various species of the Ribes genus, especially black currants. The mites colonize the leaves, feeding on the epidermal cells, which disrupts the plant's metabolic functions and leads to reduced vigor and productivity of the infested shrubs.
The biology of Anthocoptes ribis is closely linked to the phenology of its host plant. Adult females overwinter in protected areas such as bud scales or bark crevices. As the buds break in spring, the mites emerge to infest the developing leaves, where they undergo multiple generations throughout the growing season.
Damage symptoms include leaf curling, distortion, chlorosis, and sometimes the development of characteristic reddish or brown spots. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, stunted shoot growth, and a significant reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, directly impacting berry yield and quality.
