Description

The willow rust mite (lat. Anthocoptes salicis) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae, commonly known as gall mites. This specific species primarily infests trees of the genus Salix (willow). Due to their minuscule size, these mites often go unnoticed until visible plant damage occurs.

The pest specifically targets willow leaves and young shoots. By feeding on the sap of the plant, the mites disrupt normal cell function. These mites are particularly problematic in nurseries and landscape settings, where they can severely impact the aesthetic appeal and overall health of willow trees.

The life cycle of Anthocoptes salicis is closely synchronized with the willow's growth phase. Fertilized females overwinter in protected areas such as bud scales or bark crevices. As the trees begin to leaf out in the spring, the mites emerge to feed and reproduce, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

Typical symptoms of mite infestation include leaf deformation, yellowing, or the formation of galls and erinea. The damage leads to significant physiological stress for the host tree, causing stunted growth, leaf distortion, and premature leaf drop. In severe cases, the vitality of the entire plant may be compromised.
