Description

Anthophora is a genus of bees belonging to the family Apidae (order Hymenoptera). While most members of this genus act as beneficial pollinators, certain species can become problematic for agricultural and horticultural crops when they excavate nests within plant stems, soft wood, or soil near the root zones of young plants.

This pest primarily affects ornamental shrubs, fruit trees such as apple and cherry, and certain vegetables. The damage occurs when the adult bees chew tunnels to create nesting chambers, which physically compromises the structural integrity of the plant tissues and can impede the transport of water and nutrients.

The biology of Anthophora is characterized by a univoltine life cycle in many regions. Adults emerge in spring or early summer to mate. The female excavates a gallery, prepares cells with a mixture of pollen and nectar as larval food, and lays eggs. After the larvae develop and pupate, the new generation remains dormant until the following season.

The harm caused by Anthophora is mainly associated with the weakening of plant shoots and roots. The galleries created by the females serve as entry points for pathogens, including various fungi and bacteria, which can cause stem rot or plant wilting. In instances of heavy infestation, the cumulative damage can lead to reduced harvest and stunted growth.

Control measures should be targeted and preventive. Key strategies include:

  • Removing and destroying infested plant stems during the dormant season.
  • Protecting the root zones of susceptible young trees with protective netting or mulch.
  • Maintaining optimal soil moisture to help plants recover from localized mechanical damage.
  • Applying targeted insecticides during the peak activity period if threshold levels of infestation are exceeded.

Given the dual nature of these insects as both potential pests and essential pollinators, integrated pest management (IPM) is strongly recommended. Agronomists should evaluate the local population density before initiating chemical control to avoid harming beneficial pollinator populations in the surrounding ecosystem.
