Systematic position: The giant honey bee (Apis dorsata) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Apidae. It is a wild species native to South and Southeast Asia. While these bees play a crucial role as pollinators in their natural habitat, they pose specific challenges to agricultural operations due to their size, nesting habits, and defensive nature.

Biology and life cycle: Unlike domestic honey bees, the giant honey bee constructs a single, massive vertical comb attached to high tree branches or cliffs. They are known for their migratory behavior, moving seasonally across landscapes. This nomadic cycle means that colonies can suddenly appear in agricultural fields, creating unexpected management complications for farmers.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary impact of Apis dorsata on agriculture is the obstruction of farming activities. Because the bees are extremely defensive when their nest is approached, human labor (pruning, harvesting, spraying) becomes hazardous. In dry seasons, they have been reported to damage the skin of soft fruits in an attempt to access moisture, leading to spoilage and secondary pest infestations.
