Anthores (Latin: Anthores) is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae. These beetles are recognized as significant pests in forestry and arboriculture, primarily affecting trees by boring into their wood during the larval stage. As members of the Coleoptera order, they exhibit specialized adaptations for exploiting woody plant tissues as their primary food source.

The host range of Anthores typically includes a variety of hardwood and ornamental trees. The larvae are wood-borers, meaning they spend the majority of their life cycle tunnelled within the host plant. By consuming the cambium and xylem, these pests systematically compromise the structural integrity and vascular function of the infested plants, which can eventually lead to canopy dieback.

The biology of Anthores is characterized by a multi-stage development process. Adult beetles emerge in late spring or summer, mate, and deposit eggs on the surface of the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the bark, transitioning into the deeper woody tissues. The larval stage may last for several years, depending on environmental factors and the nutritional quality of the wood.

The damage caused by these beetles is often identified by entry and exit holes, frass (sawdust-like excrement) accumulation, and general tree decline. The galleries bored by the larvae block the movement of water and nutrients, causing significant stress to the host plant. Chronic infestation not only inhibits growth but also makes the trees susceptible to secondary pathogens and wind damage.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical control measures. Regular pruning and the removal of dying or stressed wood are critical to reducing the habitat suitable for oviposition. For severe infestations, the application of systemic insecticides may be necessary during peak activity periods. Implementing a strict monitoring program with lures or pheromone traps is essential for timely intervention and minimizing long-term damage.
