Anthribus fasciatus

Anthribus fasciatus is a species of beetle belonging to the Anthribidae family, commonly known as fungus weevils. Unlike true weevils, they possess non-geniculate antennae and a more robust, cylindrical body shape. These insects are often found inhabiting the bark of hardwood trees, particularly those suffering from environmental stress or secondary infections.

The beetle typically affects deciduous trees and is often found in close association with scale insects. In many agricultural and forest settings, Anthribus fasciatus is attracted to trees infested with Coccidae (scales), as these areas provide both shelter and potential food sources. It is primarily considered a secondary pest that exploits already weakened or diseased host plants.

The life cycle involves the female depositing eggs into bark crevices or near existing scale insect colonies. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the bark and the cambium layer. A unique ecological aspect of this species is that, while they feed on woody tissues, their larvae are also known to prey upon the eggs and nymphs of scale insects, acting as occasional predators.

The damage caused by Anthribus fasciatus is mainly due to larval tunneling, which compromises the integrity of the tree's bark. This physical injury creates entry points for fungal pathogens, which can lead to localized bark necrosis and overall loss of tree vigor. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can lead to branch dieback or stunted growth in young saplings.

Integrated pest management strategies are recommended to mitigate the impact of this beetle on orchard or landscape trees:

• Implement regular sanitary pruning to remove dead or heavily infested wood.
• Scrub the bark during winter to remove overwintering sites for both beetles and scale insects.
