The coffee bean weevil (Araecerus levipennis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Anthribidae. Unlike typical weevils, members of this family are recognized by their distinct morphology, including elongated antennae and specific mouthparts adapted for boring into hard plant materials, which poses a significant threat to stored agricultural products.

This pest primarily infests coffee beans, cocoa beans, nutmeg, and various legumes. It is frequently encountered in tropical regions where coffee is cultivated and exported. The beetle's ability to thrive in warehouses and international trade hubs makes it a critical concern for global supply chains and agricultural quarantine services.

The life cycle of the coffee bean weevil follows complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female lays eggs by boring into the bean surface, where the larvae develop and consume the inner contents of the seed. This internal feeding makes external detection difficult until the adult insect emerges, leaving behind characteristic exit holes.

The damage caused by this pest includes substantial mass loss and degradation of the quality of coffee beans. The presence of larvae and their waste creates an environment conducive to the growth of fungi and mold, rendering the product completely unsuitable for industrial or consumer use. The economic impact can be severe if stored stocks are not properly inspected.
