Description

Systematic position and biology. The coffee bean weevil (Araecerus vieillardi) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Anthribidae family. This species is recognized as a significant pest affecting stored agricultural products, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Unlike some other store-product pests, this weevil demonstrates a high level of adaptability to various food sources, making it a critical threat to global commodity trade.

Host crops and damage. This insect primary targets coffee beans and cacao beans, but it also infests a wide range of legume seeds, oil palm kernels, and dried fruits. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which bore into the seed, consuming the internal nutrient-rich tissue. This activity results in weight loss, total destruction of the commodity, and contamination with frass, which often leads to secondary fungal infections in the stored stock.

Life cycle. The life cycle of Araecerus vieillardi is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity levels. The female lays eggs on the surface or inside cracks of the seed. Once hatched, the larvae immediately tunnel into the seed, completing their development, including the pupal stage, within the same grain. Rapid generational turnover allows populations to reach catastrophic levels in relatively short periods if conditions are not regulated.

Detection and harmfulness. Damage detection is often delayed until the adult weevils emerge from the product, leaving behind perfectly round exit holes. Infested lots show a visible decrease in quality and a characteristic musty odor. In industrial settings, the presence of these beetles can lead to the rejection of entire shipments due to quarantine regulations and quality control standards in the food industry.

Control measures. Maintaining product integrity requires a combination of strict management practices:

  • Routine fumigation of warehouse facilities to eliminate established infestations.
  • Strict quarantine inspection of imported agricultural goods to prevent entry.
  • Utilizing sealed, moisture-proof storage containers to block insect access.
  • Implementing cooling systems to maintain temperatures unfavorable for rapid development.
  • Regular monitoring using traps to detect initial infestation signs before population outbreaks.
