Lily nematode

Systematic position: The lily nematode (Aphelenchoides lilium) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Aphelenchida, family Aphelenchoididae. These microscopic organisms are highly specialized plant parasites that cause significant damage to the tissues of various ornamental crops, primarily focusing on bulbous plants.

Host plants: The primary hosts are plants of the genus Lilium. However, Aphelenchoides lilium can also affect a range of other ornamental bulbous flowers. The pest is particularly problematic in nursery environments where dense planting and high humidity provide ideal conditions for the rapid spread and colonization of the nematodes.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Aphelenchoides lilium involves an egg, four larval stages, and an adult form. These nematodes are moisture-dependent, utilizing films of water on the plant surface to migrate to new infection sites. They enter host tissues through stomata. When the environment becomes unfavorable, they can enter a state of dormancy, which allows them to survive within dry bulb scales for extended periods.

Character of damage and harm: Typical damage symptoms include twisted or distorted leaves, yellow or brown lesions, and stunted stem growth. Infected tissues become brittle and prone to secondary rot. Severe infestations result in bud blasting, lack of blooming, and eventual death of the bulb, making the plants unsellable and reducing the overall vigor of the collection.
