Description
The sugar nematode (Aphelenchoides sacchari) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. It is characterized by its ability to feed on a wide variety of fungal mycelia as well as internal plant tissues, making it a highly adaptable organism.
This pest is known to affect various crops, particularly sugarcane, bulbs, and numerous ornamental plants grown in greenhouse environments. Because it thrives in moist conditions, it is frequently found in irrigation systems and nursery soil mixes where humidity remains consistently high.
The life cycle of the nematode is relatively short under favorable conditions, progressing through egg, four larval stages, and the adult phase. It primarily spreads through contaminated irrigation water, human activity, or the movement of infested plant material between fields or greenhouse benches.
Symptoms of infestation often include necrosis of leaf tissue, stunted growth, twisted or malformed stems, and a reduction in overall plant vigor. By weakening the plant structure, Aphelenchoides sacchari also creates entry points for secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to more extensive tissue rot.
Effective control strategies require a combination of sanitation and cultural practices. Growers should focus on using pathogen-free soil, hot water treatment of bulbs and planting stock, and improving drainage to reduce soil moisture. Regular monitoring and removing symptomatic plants are essential to prevent the spread of this nematode throughout the crop production cycle.
