Tagetes leaf nematode

Aphelenchoides tagetae is a microscopic parasitic worm belonging to the order Aphelenchida and the family Aphelenchoididae. These nematodes are specialized plant pathogens that predominantly inhabit the aerial parts of various ornamental and herbaceous plants, causing significant economic and aesthetic damage.

The primary hosts of this nematode are plants of the genus Tagetes (marigolds), although it is known to infect a range of other ornamental species. As obligate parasites, they rely entirely on the living tissues of the host plant to complete their life cycle, causing the plant to decline in vitality and visual appeal.

The biology of the nematode is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Adults and larvae move through water films on the surface of stems and leaves to reach entry points like stomata. Within the plant tissues, they pierce cells with their stylet, causing mechanical damage and injecting enzymes that lead to the death of local cell groups, which eventually manifests as visible lesions.

Damage caused by Aphelenchoides tagetae appears as interveinal chlorosis, which progresses into brown, necrotic patches. As the infection spreads, leaves become deformed, shriveled, and may drop off prematurely. Severe infestations can stunt the plant's growth, prevent proper flowering, and lead to total mortality if left unchecked during a high-humidity season.

Effective management requires a combination of hygiene and chemical intervention:

• Ensure all plant stock is purchased from certified, pest-free nurseries.
• Maintain proper spacing between plants to improve air circulation and reduce humidity on leaves.
• Remove and safely dispose of all symptomatic foliage and debris.
• Implement soil solarization or heat treatment for suspected contaminated growing media.
• Use systemic nematicides in accordance with local regulations to suppress high populations.
