The Viburnum leafroller (Latin: Aphelia viburnana) is a member of the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a well-known agricultural pest that targets a variety of woody shrubs and trees, significantly affecting both ornamental gardens and commercial berry plantations across its geographic range.

This pest has a diverse host range, primarily infesting Viburnum species, currants, raspberries, honeysuckles, and various fruit-bearing trees such as apples and pears. By feeding on both foliage and reproductive plant structures, the larvae can cause substantial physiological stress to the host plants during the critical early growing season.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern. Overwintering occurs at the larval stage, protected within silken cocoons hidden in bark crevices or plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds and young leaves. Pupation typically takes place within the protection of leaves rolled and bound by silk webbing.

Damage is characterized by the rolling and webbing of leaves, which serves as a shelter for the larvae while they skeletonize the leaf tissue. This process impairs photosynthesis and causes aesthetic damage to ornamental shrubs. When infestation levels are high, the loss of leaves and damage to developing buds can directly correlate with reduced fruit yield and stunted plant growth.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as removing infested leaves and cleaning debris from around the base of the plant, are crucial. During peak infestation periods, targeted application of specific insecticides is recommended. Additionally, pheromone traps are widely used in orchards to detect the onset of flight and determine the precise timing for control interventions to achieve maximum efficacy.
