Aphrodisium

Aphrodisium is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae. These insects are well-known wood-boring pests that target various deciduous tree species. Their presence in orchards and forest plantations can lead to severe economic losses due to the damage caused by their larvae, which tunnel deep into the woody tissues.

The host range of these beetles typically includes various fruit trees, particularly citrus and some stone fruit varieties. The larvae burrow into the trunk and branches, where they feed on the cambium and heartwood. This activity significantly weakens the structural integrity of the tree and disrupts the transport of water and nutrients.

The biology of Aphrodisium involves a complete metamorphosis. The life cycle begins when an adult female deposits eggs into cracks or wounds on the bark. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae bore into the tree, spending a significant period of time developing inside the woody tissue, which provides them with both food and protection from environmental factors.

The damage caused by these pests is cumulative and often goes unnoticed until the tree shows clear signs of decline, such as thinning canopy, yellowing leaves, or dead branches. In cases of heavy infestation, the cumulative damage to the xylem and phloem can eventually kill the tree. Exit holes made by emerging adults are a critical diagnostic feature for field identification.

Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical control measures. Since larvae are protected by the wood, preventing initial infestation is key to successful orchard management. Recommended practices include:

• Implementing strict quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infested nursery stock.
• Regular sanitation pruning and the prompt removal and destruction of heavily infested trees.
• Monitoring adult beetle activity using pheromone-based traps.
• Application of residual systemic insecticides during the peak adult flight period to prevent egg-laying.
