Carob moth

The carob moth (Apomyelois ceratoniae) is a destructive pest belonging to the Pyralidae family and the order Lepidoptera. Known as a serious agricultural polyphage, this insect causes significant economic losses worldwide by infesting a wide range of fruits and stored products, necessitating strict monitoring and integrated control.

This pest infests a variety of crops, including pomegranates, figs, carob pods, pistachios, walnuts, almonds, and dates. The larvae penetrate the fruit, feeding on the seeds and internal tissue. This activity often leads to total crop failure or renders the fruit unsuitable for market sale due to frass accumulation and secondary fungal infections.

The biology and lifecycle of the carob moth are highly adaptable, often completing several generations within a single growing season depending on local temperatures. Females typically lay eggs on or near the fruit surface. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the fruit, creating complex tunnels that protect them from external environmental factors and many pesticide applications.

The damage caused by this moth is characterized by the presence of webbing and excrement on the fruit exterior, followed by premature fruit drop. Its economic impact is exacerbated by the pest's ability to survive in storage facilities, where it can continue to damage harvested produce throughout the winter if the conditions remain favorable.

Effective management and protection strategies include a combination of cultural and chemical interventions:

• Strict orchard sanitation by removing and destroying infested fruit.
• Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult flight patterns and population density.
• Application of biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis.
• Targeted insecticide treatments during the egg-laying period to prevent larval penetration.
