Apriona cinerea is a serious wood-boring insect belonging to the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. This pest is a major threat to a variety of deciduous trees, causing severe structural damage to the stems and branches of its hosts.
The host range of this beetle is quite broad, affecting several tree species of economic importance. Commonly attacked hosts include mulberry, poplar, willow, and various fruit trees like apple and pear. The beetle prefers both healthy trees and those already weakened by environmental stresses or other pathogens.
The biological cycle of Apriona cinerea typically spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adult beetles emerge to mate and lay eggs within the bark crevices. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive tunnels that serve as their primary feeding sites until they eventually pupate inside the woody tissue.
The primary damage is caused by the larvae as they mine through the xylem. This feeding activity disrupts the flow of water and nutrients, leading to branch dieback, crown thinning, and eventual mortality of the infested tree.
