Systematic position: The European garden spider (genus Araneus) belongs to the order Araneae, family Araneidae. In agricultural terms, it is not considered a plant pest or a phytophage. Instead, it is an orb-weaver spider that functions as a predator, playing a neutral or beneficial role in the garden ecosystem depending on the crop density.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in silken sacs that overwinter in protected locations. Young spiders emerge in spring and begin building circular webs on garden plants. They are typically nocturnal, using plants as anchors for their silk structures to catch prey such as flying insects.

Damage patterns and harmfulness: Araneus spiders do not feed on plant tissues, nor do they inject toxins into crops. Their presence is generally harmless. The primary negative impact is the accumulation of webs on flowers, vegetables, or fruits, which can reduce the aesthetic value of ornamental plants and complicate the harvesting process if the population density is exceptionally high.

Agronomic significance: In most professional farming systems, these spiders are seen as allies. As generalist predators, they consume large numbers of agricultural pests, including aphids, leafhoppers, and dipteran insects. Promoting or tolerating their presence can often reduce the need for synthetic chemical interventions against harmful insects.

Protection measures: There is no necessity for chemical control since these spiders are not true pests. Integrated management techniques include:

• Regular pruning of excessive vegetation to discourage web placement in high-traffic areas.
• Manual removal of webs from sensitive ornamental surfaces.
• Maintaining clean aisles to limit nesting sites for large orb-weavers.
• Avoiding non-selective pesticides to maintain biodiversity in the garden environment.
