Araneus circe

Araneus circe belongs to the order Araneae and the family Araneidae. As an orb-weaver, this spider is characterized by its large, geometric webs constructed to intercept flying insects. It is a common inhabitant of gardens, orchards, and agricultural peripheries where vegetation structure supports its web-building behavior.

Contrary to the common classification as a "pest," Araneus circe does not feed on plant tissues. It is an obligate carnivore, meaning its impact on plants is purely structural rather than nutritional. It poses no risk of defoliation, sucking sap, or damaging fruit, thus it should not be categorized alongside agricultural pests like aphids or mites.

The biological cycle of this spider is seasonal. Adults reach maturity during the summer months, establishing large territories. Breeding occurs in late summer or autumn, followed by the deposition of silken egg sacs. These sacs protect the offspring through the winter, with the new generation emerging in the following spring to repeat the cycle.

Its role in the agricultural landscape is that of a beneficial arthropod. By consuming a wide variety of flying insects, including some pests that cause damage to crops, Araneus circe acts as a natural biological control agent. The presence of these spiders usually indicates a healthy, diverse environment with minimal chemical pressure.
