Archachatina

Description

Archachatina is a genus of large land snails belonging to the family Achatinidae (order Stylommatophora). These tropical mollusks are recognized as significant agricultural pests in many regions due to their large size, high reproductive rate, and dietary plasticity. Their presence in agricultural areas can lead to total crop failure if left unmanaged.

These pests pose a threat to a wide variety of cultivated plants, including vegetables such as cabbage and lettuce, fruit seedlings, and numerous ornamental species. Because they consume both leaves and succulent stems, they are particularly devastating to young seedlings in nurseries, often leaving behind nothing but skeletal plant structures.

The biology and lifecycle of Archachatina are heavily dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. They are hermaphroditic, allowing for rapid population growth under favorable conditions. They typically lay eggs in the moist soil or under leaf litter, where the young snails emerge and begin feeding immediately. Their ability to enter estivation allows them to survive dry periods, making eradication difficult.

Damage caused by Archachatina is characterized by large, irregular holes in leaves and the complete severance of stems. Their radula (feeding organ) leaves distinct scraping marks, and their mucus trails are a clear indicator of an infestation. The secondary harm caused by these snails includes the transmission of bacterial plant pathogens and the facilitation of fungal infections through the open wounds they leave on plants.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management approach. Key control strategies include:

  • maintaining a clean garden environment by removing debris and mulch;
  • creating physical barriers such as crushed eggshells or copper tape;
  • applying molluscicides containing metaldehyde according to local regulations;
  • hand-picking and destroying snails during their peak nocturnal activity;
  • modifying irrigation systems to keep the upper soil layer drier.
