Purple Archachatina
Archachatina purpurea
Description
The Purple Archachatina (Archachatina purpurea) is a large land snail classified within the order Stylommatophora and the family Achatinidae. This species is recognized as a significant invasive pest that can pose a serious threat to agricultural crops and greenhouse plants when conditions, particularly moisture and temperature, are favorable for their survival and reproduction.
The pest targets a wide variety of plant species, causing particular damage to vegetable crops, leafy greens, seedlings, and various ornamental plants. Their voracious appetite allows them to consume large quantities of plant tissue in a short period, leading to substantial economic losses in nurseries and open-field agriculture where infestations are not controlled.
The biological cycle and development of this mollusk are highly dependent on environmental humidity and temperature. Being hermaphroditic, they demonstrate a high reproductive rate, laying batches of large eggs in moist soil or organic debris. The developmental speed from hatching to sexual maturity is relatively fast, enabling the population to establish itself quickly in new environments.
Damage caused by this snail includes ragged edges on leaves, skeletonization of foliage, and complete destruction of young sprouts. They are nocturnal feeders, often leaving telltale slime trails on plants and surfaces. Beyond physical destruction, their feeding behavior opens entry points for various fungal and bacterial pathogens, which further compromise the health of the host plant.
Effective control measures require an integrated approach including sanitation and chemical intervention. Growers should remove weeds and plant debris that provide daytime shelter for snails. The use of molluscicides containing metaldehyde or iron phosphate is highly effective for population management in controlled environments. Physical barriers and consistent monitoring of damp areas are also essential strategies.
