Description
Archips argyrospilus, commonly known as the fruit-tree leafroller, is a member of the family Tortricidae, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. This moth is a significant agricultural pest, well-documented for its destructive impact on fruit production and ornamental tree nurseries.
The insect feeds on a wide range of host plants. Preferred species include apple, pear, peach, plum, and cherry trees. Additionally, it frequently infests deciduous hardwood trees such as oak, maple, and elm, making it a versatile pest that can survive in diverse environmental landscapes.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, typically as masses on small branches. In the spring, larvae emerge coinciding with bud break and begin feeding immediately on new leaves, expanding their range to buds and developing fruit as the season progresses.
Larval damage is highly destructive. They roll leaves into shelters held together by silk, consuming foliage and causing significant skeletonization. More importantly, they scar young fruit, leading to stunted growth, deep depressions, and overall unmarketability, which results in substantial economic losses.
Control strategies require an integrated approach. Effective methods include:

- Applying Bacillus thuringiensis or specific insect growth regulators during the early larval stage.
- Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids within the orchard ecosystem.
