Asian leafroller

Systematic position: The Asian leafroller (Archips breviplicanus) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is a highly destructive pest, primarily occurring in East Asian regions where it poses a significant threat to deciduous fruit orchards and forest plantations.

Host plants and damage: This species targets a variety of fruit trees, including apples, pears, peaches, and plums. Caterpillars exhibit a unique feeding behavior: they tie leaves together with silk, forming protective shelters or rolls. Within these structures, they skeletonize the foliage and frequently consume developing buds and young fruit, resulting in severe crop damage.

Biology and life cycle: Archips breviplicanus typically completes one or two generations annually. The larvae overwinter in small silk-lined hibernacula hidden in bark crevices or under moss. As soon as temperatures rise in the spring, the larvae emerge and move to the expanding buds to begin feeding, which coincides with the early phenological stages of the host tree.

Economic impact: The damage caused by this pest is not limited to leaf area reduction. By feeding on the fruit, the larvae create entry points for pathogens and rot, significantly reducing fruit shelf life and marketability. Heavy infestations lead to extensive fruit drop and can weaken the overall vitality of the tree if left untreated.

Control measures: Managing the Asian leafroller requires a multi-faceted approach involving cultural and chemical strategies:

• Physical removal of infested leaf rolls during the growing season.
• Scraping and cleaning tree trunks in late winter to destroy overwintering larvae.
• Monitoring populations using pheromone traps to time the application of insecticides accurately.
• Applying targeted insecticide treatments after petal fall to reduce larval populations before they enter the fruit.
