Description
The Oak leaf roller (Archips fervidanus) is a species of moth within the Tortricidae family. It is recognized as a significant defoliator, causing considerable damage to oak forest ecosystems and urban tree plantations through the feeding activity of its larvae during the spring and early summer months.
This pest is primarily associated with trees of the genus Quercus. The larvae exhibit a strong preference for young leaves, which they consume in large quantities. The presence of the larvae is often indicated by the leaves being rolled or tied together with silken threads, forming protective shelters where the caterpillars reside.
Regarding its biology, the species typically completes one generation per year. The eggs are deposited on the bark of host trees, where they remain in diapause throughout the winter. Upon the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, the larvae hatch in synchronization with the bud burst of the host oak trees, ensuring immediate access to food.
The economic and ecological impact of Archips fervidanus is linked to the extent of defoliation. Persistent annual attacks lead to reduced radial growth, canopy dieback, and increased vulnerability to secondary pathogens such as wood-boring beetles and fungal diseases, which can ultimately threaten the long-term vitality of the forest stand.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is highly recommended, involving the monitoring of larval populations through pheromone traps for adult moths.
