Host plants: The pest primarily targets spruce (Picea) and fir (Abies) species. However, it can also infest pines (Pinus) and larch (Larix). Both mature forest trees and young nursery saplings are susceptible to damage, making it a concern for forestry management and ornamental gardening.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. It overwinters as early-instar larvae in protective silk cocoons nestled within bark crevices or near bud scales. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on developing needles and buds, often spinning silk threads to bind foliage together for protection.

Character of damage and harm: The damage is primarily caused by larval feeding, which leads to the formation of silk-lined nests among needles. The larvae consume the tissues, causing the needles to wither and drop prematurely. Extensive feeding can lead to severe defoliation, loss of vigor, and the potential death of terminal shoots, which permanently affects the tree's growth and structure.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for this species involves monitoring larval emergence using pheromone traps. Control measures include:

  • Application of systemic insecticides during the early larval stage.
  • Usage of biological pesticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis.
  • Removing and destroying heavily infested branches during the dormant season to reduce the overwintering population.
