Description
The rose tortrix (Archips rosana) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the family Tortricidae. It is widely distributed across temperate regions and is known for its polyphagous nature, which makes it a persistent threat to fruit production and ornamental horticulture.
This species infests a vast range of host plants, most notably pome fruits like apples and pears, as well as stone fruits such as cherries and plums. It is also frequently found on various berry shrubs and is a major pest for rose gardens, often causing aesthetic damage in addition to agricultural losses.
The life cycle of the rose tortrix consists of one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, which are laid in small, flat clusters on the bark of host trees. Larvae emerge in the spring, coinciding with bud burst, and begin feeding on developing tissue. They transition through several instars before pupating inside their characteristic leaf rolls.
The damage caused by the larvae is quite distinct. They feed on buds, flowers, and foliage, using silk to bind leaves together into rolls or clusters. This behavior protects them from predators and chemicals. Severe infestations lead to significant defoliation, destruction of fruit buds, and damage to the skin of developing fruits.

- Orchard sanitation, including the removal of egg clusters on bark during dormant pruning.
- Use of pheromone traps to monitor adult moth activity and timing of interventions.
