Description

Systematic position. Arge clavicornis belongs to the order Hymenoptera, within the family Argidae. This insect is a significant defoliator specializing in birch trees (Betula species) and is widely distributed across various woodland habitats throughout its native range.

Host plants and economic impact. The sawfly primarily affects birch trees. While established adult trees can often withstand minor defoliation, repeated annual attacks by Arge clavicornis larvae can cause significant stress, reducing the vigor of the tree and making it more susceptible to secondary infestations and pathogens.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis. It typically overwinter as prepupae within silken cocoons located in the soil. Pupation occurs in the spring, followed by the emergence of adults. Females utilize their saw-like ovipositors to insert eggs directly into the leaf tissue, which serves as both protection and an immediate food source for hatching larvae.
