Rose sawfly

The rose sawfly (Arge ochropus) is a member of the order Hymenoptera and the family Argidae. This insect is a significant pest of rose bushes, widely distributed across various temperate regions. It is well-known for its ability to cause rapid defoliation, which can drastically reduce the health and vigor of ornamental plants.

This pest specifically targets species within the genus Rosa, including both wild dog rose and cultivated varieties. Because the larvae feed gregariously, they are capable of stripping a plant of its foliage in a relatively short period, which is particularly detrimental to young or recently established rose bushes.

The life cycle of Arge ochropus includes overwintering in the soil as prepupae within cocoons. Adults emerge in late spring and early summer. Females use their ovipositors to insert eggs into the tissues of young stems, which often causes the shoots to become scarred or slightly curved. Larvae feed on the leaves, passing through several instars before returning to the soil to pupate.

The primary symptom of infestation is the skeletonization of leaves, starting from the edges and progressing inwards. Often, only the midribs of the leaves remain after an attack. This heavy feeding pressure weakens the plant's physiological capacity, leading to poor bud formation, reduced flowering, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections such as black spot.

Successful management of the rose sawfly requires a combination of monitoring and physical or chemical intervention. Consider the following strategies to protect your garden:

• Manual removal and destruction of larvae during the early stages of the attack.
• Pruning and disposing of infested shoots containing egg clutches.
• Cultivating the soil around the base of the bushes in early spring to disrupt pupation.
• Applying systemic insecticides or neem-based products when young larvae are detected.
• Encouraging natural predators such as birds and parasitic wasps in the garden.
