Description
Systematic position: The birch sawfly (Arge pullata) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Argidae. It is a significant defoliating pest that affects various birch species, often causing widespread concern in landscaping and forestry management.
Host plants and damage: The primary host is the birch tree (Betula species). The economic impact is mainly visual and physiological; heavy infestations cause premature leaf drop, which significantly weakens the tree, reduces its vigor, and makes it susceptible to environmental stresses and secondary pest attacks.
