Argyroploce

The genus Argyroploce belongs to the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are widely recognized as significant agricultural pests. Due to their wide distribution and high reproductive potential, they pose a constant threat to commercial orchards, requiring consistent monitoring and integrated management strategies to prevent extensive economic losses.

These pests primarily target fruit trees, including pome fruits such as apples and pears, as well as stone fruits like plums and cherries. Beyond commercial crops, they may also inhabit various deciduous trees and shrubs, showing a high degree of polyphagy. Their ability to switch between hosts allows them to maintain populations even in diverse orchard ecosystems.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Overwintering typically occurs as a larva hidden within silken cocoons in bark crevices or among leaf litter. Once spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds, young leaves, and later on, the developing fruit, depending on the specific phenological stage of the host plant.

Damage caused by Argyroploce is distinct; larvae spin webs to roll or tie leaves together, creating a protected environment where they feed, often leading to severe defoliation. Furthermore, when they attack fruit, the larvae burrow into the flesh, creating deep entry holes. This not only destroys the quality of the fruit but also makes the plant vulnerable to secondary infections and rot.
