Description
The spruce bud moth (Argyroploce abietana) is a destructive insect pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It specifically targets spruce trees, causing significant damage to developing buds and new foliage, which can severely stunt the growth of young trees.
The primary host plants for this species are various spruce species (Picea). While it is more common in nurseries and young plantations, mature trees can also be impacted during outbreaks, leading to thinning of the crown and overall loss of tree vigor over several seasons.
The life cycle of the moth typically involves one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in small cocoons tucked into bark crevices. In early spring, as temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to bore into the developing buds, destroying them before they can flush, and later webbing the needles of emerging shoots together.
Damage is characterized by hollowed-out buds and clusters of needles tied together with silk, forming visible nests. The harm is twofold: direct loss of growth potential due to bud destruction and secondary stress that leaves the tree susceptible to diseases and other wood-boring insects.
Integrated pest management strategies are recommended to mitigate damage:
- Regular monitoring of terminal and lateral buds in early spring for signs of larval feeding.
- Applying biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis during the early larval stage.
- Using chemical control measures as a last resort, timed precisely with the larval activity period.
- Promoting the presence of parasitic wasps and birds that naturally prey on moth larvae.
