Pea moth (Argyroploce carpophaga)

Systematic position. Argyroploce carpophaga belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This species is a significant agricultural pest known for its specialized diet, primarily targeting the pods and seeds of various leguminous plants, which leads to substantial losses in seed yield and quality.

Host plants. The pest predominantly infests legume crops, including green peas, vetch, lentils, and beans. Due to its high host specificity, it is often found in areas where these crops are grown intensively, and it can also persist on wild legume species, facilitating its survival in the agricultural landscape throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adult moths are typically nocturnal, laying their eggs on the surfaces of young pods. Once hatched, the larvae penetrate the pod to feed on the developing seeds. The overwintering usually occurs as mature larvae inside silken cocoons buried within the topsoil or plant debris.

Type of damage and harmfulness. Larvae bore into the developing seeds, consuming the endosperm and germ. This feeding behavior not only results in direct weight loss and destruction of seeds but also leaves behind frass and webbing, which ruins the marketability of the crop. High infestation rates significantly impact crop viability, making infested batches unsuitable for both human consumption and seed purposes.

Control measures. Successful management involves a combination of cultural and chemical tactics:

• Implementing crop rotation to prevent the buildup of pest populations.
• Performing autumn deep plowing to disturb overwintering larvae in the soil.
• Planting early-maturing varieties to bypass the peak activity of the moths.
• Applying selective insecticides during the period of egg hatching to prevent larvae from entering the pods.
