Systematic position. The bamboo leaf roller Argyroploce paragramma belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. This species is an obligate phytophagous insect specifically adapted to feed on various species of bamboo, often acting as a significant pest in both natural habitats and cultivated landscapes.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets bamboo plants. Damage is most significant in dense bamboo groves, decorative garden plantings, and agricultural plantations where bamboo is grown for commercial harvest. The pest can affect various growth stages of the plant, focusing on young and tender foliage.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Adult moths lay their eggs on young leaves or stems. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin constructing shelters by binding leaves together with silk, where they reside and feed throughout their development before pupating within these protective structures.

Damage and harmfulness. The primary injury is caused by larvae that roll or tie leaves together to feed on the leaf tissues. This behavior results in ragged, deformed foliage and reduced photosynthetic activity. In cases of severe infestation, the plant’s growth is significantly stunted, and the aesthetic appearance of the bamboo is severely compromised, leading to economic losses in nursery production.

Protection measures. Managing Argyroploce paragramma requires integrated pest management (IPM) practices to maintain healthy bamboo populations:

• Conducting regular visual surveys to identify early signs of leaf rolling.
• Pruning and destroying infested leaf clusters to reduce the local population.
• Applying biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis to target early larval stages.
• Implementing systemic chemical control only when monitoring thresholds indicate a high risk of significant plant damage.
