Description

The walnut leafroller (Argyrotaenia juglandana) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is recognized as a major threat to nut production, specifically affecting various species of the Juglans and Carya genera, and can cause significant economic losses in commercial orchards.

The pest primarily targets walnut and hickory trees, but its host range also includes a variety of deciduous trees such as apple, pear, and maple. The larvae are generalist feeders to some extent, but they show a strong preference for tender foliage and developing fruit clusters, which are essential for the yield and quality of the crop.

The biological cycle of Argyrotaenia juglandana consists of two generations per year. The larvae spend the winter in silken hibernacula located in bark crevices or under plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on developing buds and young leaves, marking the start of the infestation period.

Damage symptoms include leaf skeletonization, leaf rolling, and the webbing of leaves and fruit clusters together. The larvae reside inside these protective silken structures, consuming plant tissue. Besides direct foliage loss, the damage to young nuts often leads to fruit drop or vulnerability to secondary pathogens, which significantly reduces the harvestable yield.
