Oak leafroller moth

Argyrotaenia quercifoliana is a species of moth belonging to the Tortricidae family, commonly known as leafrollers. This insect is widely recognized as a significant pest of oak trees and other deciduous woody plants in various temperate regions, often causing localized defoliation.

Regarding its classification, this pest belongs to the order Lepidoptera. The adults are relatively small moths with a wing pattern that provides effective camouflage against bark and foliage, making them difficult to spot during their flight period, which typically occurs during the spring and early summer months.

The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larvae overwinter in sheltered locations on the host tree, such as crevices in the bark. As the buds break in spring, the larvae become active and begin feeding on the developing foliage, which is their most nutritious food source.

The damage is characterized by larvae spinning silk to roll or tie leaves together, forming protective shelters. Inside these structures, the larvae feed on the leaf tissue, often causing skeletonization or total leaf consumption. Severe infestations can result in significant crown thinning, which stresses the host tree and reduces its overall vigor.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Biological control using Bacillus thuringiensis is highly effective when applied during the early larval stages. Furthermore, monitoring adult flight using pheromone traps allows for precise timing of interventions, reducing the need for broad-spectrum chemical applications.
