Brown pine longhorn beetle

Arhopalus ferus

Description

The brown pine longhorn beetle (scientific name Arhopalus ferus) is a wood-boring pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is native to many coniferous forest regions and is recognized as a primary threat to pine and spruce wood quality, especially in logged areas and weakened stands.

The beetle primarily targets coniferous host plants, with a strong preference for pine species. It also infests spruce, fir, and larch trees. The insect is opportunistic, preferring to lay eggs on dying trees, storm-felled timber, logging residues, and lumber that has been stored in forests without proper chemical or mechanical protection.

The biological development of Arhopalus ferus occurs internally within the woody tissue. Adult females deposit eggs into bark crevices. Once hatched, the larvae begin feeding just beneath the bark before tunneling deep into the wood. The larval stage is prolonged, often lasting one to two years depending on the nutritional status of the timber and ambient temperature conditions.

Damage caused by this pest is significant in terms of forest pathology and wood technology. The larvae excavate extensive tunnels filled with frass, which disrupts the structural integrity of the wood. Infested timber loses its commercial value rapidly, and in living forests, the beetle's presence often accelerates the death of trees that are already suffering from drought or other biotic stresses.

Effective management and prevention strategies against this longhorn beetle include the following practices:

  • Maintaining forest hygiene by removing and destroying infested timber immediately.
  • Implementing rapid transportation of felled logs to processing facilities.
  • Debarking wood stored at timber yards to eliminate egg-laying sites.
  • Applying monitoring programs to track beetle flight periods and population spikes.
  • Using insecticide treatments on valuable log piles where physical exclusion is impossible.
