Systematic position: The Thunderbolt beetle (Arhopalus fulminans) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles). This insect is a specialist wood-boring species, and while it performs a natural role in decomposing dying wood, it can become a destructive pest in specific forestry and horticultural contexts.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this beetle are deciduous trees, specifically those belonging to the genus Quercus (oaks). It also targets chestnut trees, typically preferring specimens that have already been stressed by drought, poor soil conditions, or previous mechanical injuries that compromised the bark’s integrity.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves egg-laying on the bark, followed by larval development within the wood. The larvae bore extensive galleries through the cambium and sapwood, consuming the nutritious tissue. This feeding phase can last for several months or even years, depending on environmental factors, before the larvae pupate and emerge as adult beetles.

Damage and pest impact: Damage is characterized by the presence of wood frass (sawdust-like debris) ejected from exit holes or trapped within bark fissures. The structural integrity of the timber is severely compromised by these internal tunnels, leading to canopy dieback, branch failure, and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the tree due to girdling or physiological strain.

Management and protection: Controlling Arhopalus fulminans requires proactive silvicultural practices rather than direct chemical application. Strategies include:

• removing and destroying infested wood to prevent the spread of adult beetles;
• maintaining overall tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management;
• sanitation of the orchard or forest floor to eliminate deadwood that serves as breeding sites;
• monitoring adult flight activity using pheromone or light traps during the peak summer emergence period.
