Aristobia is a genus of longhorn beetles belonging to the family Cerambycidae, specifically within the Lamiinae subfamily. These insects are notorious wood-boring pests, as their larvae live and feed inside the living tissues of trees. Due to their cryptic lifestyle and destructive feeding habits, they are considered significant threats to woody plants, often causing severe economic losses in orchards and plantations.
The primary host plants for Aristobia species include various fruit and ornamental trees. They are particularly destructive to the Rosaceae family, including apple, pear, and stone fruit trees like cherry and plum. Additionally, they are known to attack citrus species, making them a major concern for both commercial fruit production and the maintenance of healthy ornamental landscapes in affected climatic zones.
The biology of the Aristobia beetle involves a multi-year development cycle. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, often feeding on the bark of young twigs. Females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark or specifically carved notches on the trunk and large branches. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, creating extensive galleries that compromise the tree's health.
