The pill bug (genus Armadillidium) belongs to the order Isopoda and the family Armadillidiidae. These are unique terrestrial crustaceans that thrive in damp and shaded environments. In agriculture, they are identified as pests that can cause significant damage to young crops, especially in greenhouse conditions or under garden mulch.

This pest attacks a wide range of plants, including vegetables, flowers, and ornamental seedlings. Crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and tuberous plants are particularly susceptible. Pill bugs often target the root zones and lower stems, feeding on tender tissues that come into direct contact with moist soil.

The biology of Armadillidium is highly dependent on humidity. Females carry their eggs in a specialized brood pouch on their ventral side. The development involves several molting stages as the juveniles grow into adults. These organisms can live for several years, preferring habitats with high organic matter content where they can feed and reproduce efficiently.

Damage is characterized by chewed edges on leaves and stems close to the soil surface. They are most dangerous to newly germinated seedlings, as their feeding can lead to total crop loss. The pest's damage potential increases in greenhouses with poor ventilation and high soil moisture, which creates an optimal habitat for colony expansion.

Protection and control measures focus on eliminating the conditions that support the pest's survival:

  • Maintaining proper drainage and air circulation in greenhouse facilities.
  • Removing debris, old boards, and moist organic matter that provide shelters.
  • Adjusting watering schedules to keep the surface soil drier where possible.
  • Using authorized insecticidal baits or dusts in high-infestation areas.
  • Implementing barriers, such as diatomaceous earth, around vulnerable plant stems.
