Nose pill woodlouse

The nose pill woodlouse (Armadillidium nasatum) is a crustacean belonging to the order Isopoda and the family Armadillidiidae. Unlike many other woodlice species, A. nasatum is highly adaptive and frequently becomes a significant nuisance in greenhouse environments, plant nurseries, and indoor gardens where moisture levels remain consistently high.

This pest is known for causing damage to a wide range of crops. It primarily targets germinating seeds, young seedlings, and low-growing ornamental plants. By feeding on tender stems, roots, and the undersides of leaves, the woodlouse can cause severe stunting or total destruction of delicate plant material, significantly reducing crop yield and quality.

The biology of Armadillidium nasatum is fundamentally tied to humidity. As they rely on gills for respiration, they are strictly bound to moist environments. The life cycle involves multiple molts, during which the woodlouse grows. Females carry their young in a brood pouch, which allows for high survival rates of offspring in the stable conditions provided by greenhouse structures.

Damage symptoms usually appear as irregular, ragged holes in leaves and chewed-off root systems. Because the pest is nocturnal, growers often struggle to detect them during the day when they retreat into cracks, under pots, or under organic debris. Their ability to hide makes population monitoring challenging without careful inspection of potential refuges.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and environmental control. To minimize the population, follow these recommendations:

• Improve greenhouse drainage to reduce soil moisture levels.
• Remove leaf litter, pots, and debris where woodlice hide.
• Practice regular soil cultivation to disturb nesting sites.
• Utilize traps or appropriate chemical baits approved for indoor plant pest control if infestations are severe.
