Description

The musk beetle (Aromia moschata) belongs to the longhorn beetle family (Cerambycidae), order Coleoptera. The species derives its common name from the distinct musky odor released by its thoracic glands, which serves as a chemical defense against potential predators.

The primary hosts for this pest include various broad-leaved tree species. It most frequently infests willows, poplars, and aspens, and less commonly attacks alders, lindens, and fruit trees. The beetle typically favors weakened or decaying wood, but in cases of high population density, it can also infest healthy trees.

The life cycle of the beetle spans between two and three years. Adult beetles are active during the summer months, feeding on tree sap and flower nectar. Females deposit eggs into bark crevices, after which the larvae bore deep into the trunk, creating extensive galleries that compromise the structural integrity of the wood.

Damage symptoms are characterized by numerous exit holes in the trunks and branches. The larvae cause significant stress to the tree by disrupting vascular systems and reducing the tree's resistance to wind damage. In instances of severe outbreaks, this pest can lead to the decline and death of large forest or ornamental tree populations.

Management strategies rely on a holistic approach focused on maintaining tree vitality. Effective control measures include:

  • Regular sanitary pruning and the removal of infested trees followed by the burning of affected wood.
  • Bark cleaning and the application of insecticides to beetle exit sites.
  • Encouraging natural predators, such as woodpeckers, which actively hunt larvae within the wood.
  • Implementing sound silvicultural practices to bolster the overall health and immunity of the tree stand.
