Description
Taxonomic classification. Ascalapha (lat. Ascalapha) belongs to the order Neuroptera, family Ascalaphidae. Often referred to as owlflies, these insects are closely related to antlions. While they are generally recognized by their distinctive club-like antennae, some species exhibit specific behavioral patterns that may impact local flora during their larval stage.
Host crops and damage. The larvae of these insects are primarily predatory but can occasionally cause damage to ornamental plants and specialty crops when their natural prey populations fluctuate. They feed on the soft tissues of leaves and tender stems, causing aesthetic damage and physiological stress to the affected host plants in greenhouses and open fields.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in clusters on plant stems or twigs. After hatching, the larvae undergo multiple molts. They are typically nocturnal and spend the pupal stage within a silken cocoon concealed under leaf litter, soil debris, or inside the bark of trees, which serves as their overwintering site.
Nature of damage. Larval activity is characterized by irregular chewing patterns on leaf edges and stems. This mechanical damage not only reduces the photosynthetic area of the plant but also creates entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can lead to rapid wilting or necrosis of the affected plant parts if not managed early.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach. Key strategies include:
- Maintaining field hygiene by removing crop residues.
- Encouraging natural predator populations.
- Applying targeted insecticides only when economic thresholds are exceeded.
- Using row covers in high-value garden settings to prevent egg-laying.
