Systematic position: The pepper gall midge (Asphondylia capsici) belongs to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. These minute insects are specialized pests that induce the formation of abnormal tissue growth, known as galls, within the reproductive organs of host plants.

Host crops and damage: The primary host for this pest is pepper (Capsicum spp.). Adult females deposit eggs into flower buds or young fruits. As the larvae feed inside, the plant responds by forming galls. This feeding activity causes fruit malformation, stunting, and premature shedding, leading to a significant reduction in marketable produce.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Asphondylia capsici consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The larvae develop entirely within the gall tissue, where they are protected from environmental stresses and many predators. The transformation into the pupal stage often occurs within the gall itself, and once the adult emerges, it quickly seeks new healthy buds to continue the reproductive cycle.

Harmfulness: This pest is a major concern for greenhouse and field pepper production. Because the larvae remain hidden inside the developing fruit, infestation often goes unnoticed until the damage is severe. The presence of galls not only ruins the fruit quality but also predisposes the damaged tissues to secondary infections, such as bacterial soft rot and various fungal pathogens.

Protection measures: Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical practices to keep the midge population below the economic threshold:

  • Sanitation: Regularly collect and destroy all deformed fruits and fallen buds.
  • Monitoring: Use yellow sticky traps to detect the arrival and activity levels of adults.
  • Chemical control: Apply targeted insecticides during the peak flight period to minimize the next generation.
  • Crop rotation: Rotate pepper crops with non-host species to break the life cycle.
  • Biological control: Encourage or release natural enemies such as parasitoid wasps that target midge larvae.
