Description

The oak pit scale (Asterolecanium quercicola) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Asterolecaniidae. These insects are known for their ability to form scale-like coverings, which protect them while they feed on the sap of their host plants.

The primary host for this pest is the oak tree (Quercus species). The insect tends to infest the branches and trunks, often preferring younger trees or those already experiencing stress, which leads to a gradual decline in the overall vigor of the host plant.

The biological cycle of Asterolecanium quercicola consists of a single generation per year. Mated females overwinter protected by their test (shell). In the spring, they produce eggs, from which the mobile stage, known as crawlers, emerge. These crawlers relocate to suitable spots on the bark to settle and begin feeding.

Feeding damage is characterized by the formation of pits or depressions on the bark surface caused by the insect's salivary secretions. This feeding mechanism impairs nutrient transport within the tree, causing branch dieback, crown thinning, and in severe cases, the mortality of the infested tree.

Effective management strategies against the oak pit scale involve several integrated approaches:

  • Regular inspection of trees to detect early infestation signs.
  • Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce the pest population density.
