Systematic position: The rove beetle Atheta longicornis belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Staphylinidae. While many members of this family are beneficial predators, certain species, including Atheta longicornis, can become problematic in greenhouse environments where they thrive in rich, organic-heavy soil substrates.

Affected crops: This pest is primarily a concern for protected cropping systems, including vegetable seedlings and mushroom production. It frequently targets the roots and stem bases of sensitive plants, especially when the growing medium contains excessive organic matter that supports its development.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. These beetles are highly adaptive, preferring moist environments. Adults are active flyers and crawlers, which allows them to colonize new pots or beds rapidly. Larvae are typically soil-dwelling and can survive on decaying organic matter but will feed on living plant tissue if the population density is high.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary damage occurs when larvae and adults feed on root hairs and the root crown. This feeding behavior stunts plant growth and reduces vigor, leading to chlorosis and potential collapse of the seedling. The microscopic wounds created by the beetles also facilitate the entry of soil-borne pathogens, such as root rot fungi, significantly increasing overall crop loss.

Protection measures: Effective management of Atheta longicornis requires an integrated approach focusing on cultural practices. Reducing excessive moisture in the greenhouse and ensuring proper sterilization of growing media are critical preventative steps. Monitoring populations using sticky traps is recommended, while chemical intervention should be used as a last resort, prioritizing products that minimize negative impact on non-target beneficial organisms.
