Description
The Red-necked footman (Atolmis rubricollis) is a moth species belonging to the Erebidae family. Often found in coniferous and mixed woodlands, this insect is easily identifiable by its striking black wings and a prominent red patch on its thorax, which serves as a defensive warning.
Taxonomically, it is classified within the order Lepidoptera, family Erebidae. The insect is well-adapted to environments rich in lichens, which form the primary nutritional base for its larvae, though they can occasionally affect the overall health of host trees in dense populations.
The moth targets various conifer species, such as spruce, pine, and fir. While its primary diet consists of lichens growing on the bark, heavy infestations can lead to needle consumption, which can stress the trees and leave them susceptible to secondary infections or boring insects.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in a quiescent state, usually hidden within bark crevices or leaf litter. They resume feeding in early spring, undergoing several molts before pupating in protected areas on or near the tree trunk.
Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key approaches include:
- Monitoring population levels using pheromone traps.
- Encouraging natural predators such as birds and parasitic wasps.
- Applying biological insecticides during the early larval stage if necessary.
- Ensuring tree health through proper forestry management and site maintenance.
In most forest ecosystems, the Red-necked footman remains a minor pest. Chemical intervention is rarely required unless there is a significant outbreak threatening young plantations or nursery stock, in which case targeted spraying is the preferred method of control.
