The varied carpet beetle (Attagenus fasciatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Dermestidae. It is recognized globally as a significant pest of stored products. These beetles are highly adaptable and thrive in environments where organic matter is readily available for their larvae to consume, frequently infesting warehouses and domestic storage areas.

This species is notorious for damaging a wide array of goods. In agricultural contexts, they target stored grains, pulses, oilseeds, flour, and dried fruits. Beyond agricultural products, they possess a strong appetite for keratin-based materials, including furs, wool, leather, and textiles. This diverse diet allows them to survive in various storage conditions, posing a constant threat to inventory.

The life cycle of Attagenus fasciatus comprises complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs in dark, protected areas such as cracks in floors, wall crevices, or deep within infested bulk products. The larval stage is the most destructive phase, characterized by slow but persistent feeding, while the adults primarily serve the purpose of reproduction and dispersal.

The damage caused by these beetles is extensive and often cumulative. Larvae create irregular holes in products and leave behind shed skins and fine dust composed of fecal matter, which degrades the quality and safety of the material.
