Black carpet beetle
Attagenus unicolor
Description
The black carpet beetle (Attagenus unicolor) is a significant pest of stored products, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Dermestidae. Adult beetles are small, oval-shaped, and typically measure between 3 and 5 mm in length. Their coloration ranges from dark brown to black, making them relatively inconspicuous in dark storage areas.
While the adults feed primarily on pollen and nectar, it is the larvae that cause extensive damage to agricultural commodities. They are voracious feeders that infest a wide range of stored goods, including wheat, barley, corn, flour, and processed animal products such as leather, wool, and silk. Their presence in a warehouse often goes unnoticed until significant damage has occurred.
The life cycle of Attagenus unicolor consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in hidden locations, such as cracks in flooring, wall crevices, or within the product itself. The larvae are characterized by their hairy appearance and ability to survive long periods of food scarcity. Depending on the environmental conditions, the development cycle can last from several months to a year.
The economic impact is primarily due to the larvae feeding on the endosperm of grains, which severely lowers the nutritional value and germination potential of seeds. The product is also degraded by the accumulation of larval shed skins, fecal matter, and silk webbing, which can lead to rapid spoilage and contamination, rendering the material unfit for human or animal consumption.
Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach focused on sanitation and prevention. Key strategies include:
- Maintaining high hygiene standards in storage facilities to eliminate food sources;
- Regular monitoring and inspection of stored commodities;
- Application of approved chemical fumigants and contact insecticides to infested areas;
- Proper grain conditioning to keep moisture levels low, which limits larval activity.
