Woodroff's carpet beetle

Woodroff's carpet beetle (scientific name Attagenus woodroffei) is a member of the family Dermestidae (carpet beetles) within the order Coleoptera. While many related species are known primarily as household pests, this insect poses a significant economic threat to agricultural facilities, grain silos, and warehouses where dry organic materials are stored for long periods.

The pest primarily targets a wide range of stored products. Its diet includes various cereals, grains, processed food products like flour and milk powder, as well as animal-derived materials such as wool or hides. By infesting bulk storage areas, Attagenus woodroffei can cause extensive qualitative and quantitative losses, significantly reducing the market value of the harvested crop.

The biology of this species is characterized by high adaptability to indoor conditions. The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Larvae are the most destructive life stage, actively feeding and growing over several months depending on ambient temperature and humidity. They are elusive, hiding in wall voids, deep crevices, and under flooring, which makes them difficult to eradicate without professional intervention.

Infestation damage manifests as irregular holes in grains, presence of cast larval skins, and accumulation of fine frass. This waste creates an environment favorable for the growth of secondary pests, such as fungi and mites. High densities of larvae lead to the destruction of the embryo and endosperm, rendering grains unsuitable for planting or milling, often leading to total loss of the batch if ignored.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle:

• Strict sanitation practices to eliminate breeding sites and food debris.
• Routine physical inspection of storage facilities and bulk bags.
• Application of residual insecticide sprays on warehouse surfaces.
