Mango scale

Aulacaspis magniferae

Description

The mango scale (Aulacaspis magniferae) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. This armored scale insect has a broad geographical distribution across tropical and subtropical regions, where it frequently infests commercial mango orchards and various other ornamental and fruit-bearing plants.

The pest primarily targets mango trees, colonizing leaves, twigs, and fruits. Due to their small size and the protective waxy covering, they often remain unnoticed until the infestation reaches a significant level, which can lead to severe stress for the host plant and yield loss.

The biological cycle of Aulacaspis magniferae involves the egg, the mobile crawler stage, and the sessile adult female. While females remain fixed in one location under their scale, the mobile crawlers are capable of active dispersal or can be transported by wind and other insects to adjacent trees, facilitating rapid spread within an orchard.

Damage is caused by the insertion of piercing-sucking mouthparts into plant tissues, which extracts essential sap. This leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, premature leaf abscission, and potential branch dieback. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew often encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the plant's photosynthetic process.

Management of the mango scale relies on an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. Key components include strict phytosanitary measures for nursery stock, regular orchard monitoring, and targeted applications of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils that penetrate the scale cover. Encouraging natural predators, such as parasitic wasps and ladybird beetles, is also essential for biological control.

  • Regular inspection of foliage for scale presence.
  • Pruning and destruction of heavily infested branches.
  • Application of horticultural oils during the crawler emergence phase.
  • Conservation of natural enemies to keep pest populations in check.
