Description

Automeris is a genus of moths belonging to the family Saturniidae (giant silkworm moths). While the adults are recognized for their striking eye-like markings on the hindwings, the larval stage (caterpillars) is considered a pest. These caterpillars are known for their voracious appetite and often possess defensive stinging hairs, making them a challenge to manage in both forestry and horticulture.

These pests primarily target various deciduous trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. By consuming large amounts of foliage, the caterpillars directly impact the plant's ability to photosynthesize. Infestations can lead to severe defoliation, which causes significant growth reduction, canopy thinning, and in some cases, the total death of the host plant if the infestation persists over several seasons.

The life cycle of the Automeris moth typically follows a pattern of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Eggs are laid in clusters, usually on the underside of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously until they reach maturity. The pupal stage is spent inside a durable silk cocoon, which is typically attached to branches or sheltered in the debris beneath the host plant until the adult emerges.

The damage caused is categorized by the physical removal of foliage. Beyond the direct consumption, the presence of urticating (stinging) hairs on the caterpillars poses a medical risk to farmers and gardeners handling infested plants. This reaction can cause skin rashes and significant irritation. Furthermore, the loss of leaves creates stress, making the plant susceptible to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects or fungal pathogens.

Management strategies require an integrated approach. Regular scouting for egg masses and early-instar caterpillars is essential to prevent outbreaks. Biological controls such as Bacillus thuringiensis or natural parasites are often effective if applied early in the infestation cycle. When chemical intervention is necessary, targeted insecticides should be used carefully to minimize impact on beneficial pollinators and predatory insects.
