Automeris coresus

Automeris coresus is a species of moth within the Saturniidae family. While many moths in this group are admired for their size and patterns, Automeris coresus is recognized in agricultural and forestry contexts primarily due to its larvae, which can act as significant defoliators on various host plants.

The larvae primarily feed on the foliage of a diverse range of woody plants. By consuming leaf tissue, the caterpillars reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, which leads to stunted growth and increased susceptibility to secondary diseases. Severe infestations can result in total defoliation of smaller trees or shrubs within a short period.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited in clusters on the host plant leaves. The larval stage is marked by rapid growth and gregarious behavior in early instars. Once fully mature, the larvae descend to find suitable sites to pupate, constructing cocoons that are often well-camouflaged in leaf litter.

The most notable characteristic of the larvae is their urticating setae. These stinging hairs are connected to venom glands and serve as a potent defense mechanism against predators. For human workers, contact with these caterpillars causes immediate pain, inflammation, and allergic reactions, making manual maintenance tasks in infested areas hazardous without proper protection.

Managing populations of this pest requires a strategic approach:

• Manual removal of colonies using protective gear (thick gloves) to avoid stings.
• Application of microbial insecticides, such as those containing bacteria, targeting early larval stages.
